Vanessa Harden creates public interventions and art installations that explore our relationship with design, people and the world around us. Combining traditional methods of fabrication with current technologies, Vanessa creates tools that investigate the role of commodities as a catalyst for discussion about social issues. She delivers lectures and conducts workshops internationally on the topic of public art and gardening interventions.
Vanessa’s work has been published and exhibited worldwide. Notably, her Subversive Gardener series received the IF Concept Award and has been included in exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Institution as well as published in the Guardian, ViceTV, Wired and the BBC, among others.
Vanessa holds a Bachelor of Design from the Ontario College of Art in metalsmithing and jewellery as well as a Master of Art in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art. She has also been affiliated with various academic institutions including the MIT Media Lab and Concordia University.
Following her graduation from the Royal College of Art, Vanessa worked at Jason Bruges Studio from 2011-2012 where she led the team that designed, built and installed the award winning More4 Ident sculptures and the Aerial Dynamics installation for the London 2012 Coca Cola Olympic Pavilion.
In addition to her independent practice, Vanessa is a creative partner at Wild Flag Studios - a collective of artists and designers that engage with design interventions, interactive installations and public art. Their projects include the design and build of the #thebubbleofwonder, an interactive sculpture for Laurent Perrier's Christmas campaign located in the lobby of the Andaz Hotel London as well as “Queercoy,” a public intervention and human rights campaign for WorldPride Toronto.
